With Kingdom Hearts, the Final Fantasy characters retain their personalities from their games but have lived different lives than their counterparts. Capcom or Project X Zone, a portal opens up where our heroes from across the multiverse must come together to defeat their various villains who are now working for a new big bad villain. So what makes this series worthwhile? What about Kingdom Hearts compels fans to come back after 16 years? Why would anyone return again and again, year after year?įirst, it successfully combines its source materials Disney movies and Final Fantasy, in a way that many other crossovers never do. I would recommend the following: play Kingdom Hearts, find a cutscene compilation Re:Chain of Memories, watch the 358/2 Days movie in the collection, play Kingdom Hearts 2, Birth By Sleep, Dream Drop Distance, and -A fragmentary passage-, read a plot synopsis for Re:Coded, and finally watch the Union Cross Back Cover movie The overarching story is wonderful, but as I’ll explain later on, gameplay does not hold up in every entry.

If I had to offer one piece of advice for newcomers, I would say it’s fine to skip some of the games. I don’t want to spoil too much but it is a beautiful and tragic series. Being able to play and watch the series, seeing all the story pieces fall into place, seeing the improvements in gameplay, and watch characters grow back to back is, surprisingly, more clarifying than waiting years between entries.

Thankfully, Square-Enix remastered, remade and re-released the entire series in three collections on the PS4, with a brand new collection collecting those collections in 2018 called -The Story So Far. Let’s run down what we have so far: We start on the PS2 with the first title, then the sequel Chain of Memories was released on Game Boy Advance, then back to PS2 for Kingdom Hearts 2, then to mobile-game-turned-DS-title Coded, followed by another DS title 358/2 Days, then PSP, 3DS, and another mobile game and finally the latest entry, 0.2 Birth By Sleep -a fragmentary passage-, coming in on the last collection on the PS4 Looking at this, frankly, mess of a release schedule, it’s no wonder the series is considered a confusing jumble. Kingdom Hearts III might be launching soon, but the franchise can’t be con tained to a simple trilogy.
